The core of your protagonist’s emotional journey, TRANSFORMATIONAL ARCS are an essential part of every great film or tv script.
Join us for a live, interactive deep dive Saturday August 26 from 10-11:30am PST. Tim and Linda will take you through the key elements of transformational arcs and will answer any and all questions you may have on the topic.
In this 90 minute free webinar, Linda and Tim will show you how to enhance the emotional journey of your protagonist via the following concepts:
- Establish the Ordinary World to give an anchor to the arc.
- Introduce the Catalyst in conflict. Establish the vulnerabilities of the Hero and build a fear that serves both character and story.
- Create Rising Conflict: The rising conflict builds tension and serves as a catalyst for change.
- Externalize the Internal Conflict: Actions speak louder than words, so use the characters’ decisions, behaviors, and reactions to showcase their evolution. Show how their choices reflect their changing beliefs, motivations, and goals.
- Employ Turning Points: Utilize major turning points in the story to mark significant shifts in the character’s journey. Each turning point should push the protagonist closer to their ultimate transformation.
- Emphasize the Midpoint: The midpoint of the story often serves as a crucial moment for the protagonist’s transformational arc. It should be active and dynamic.
- Show Internal Reflection: Alongside external action and conflict, allocate moments for your character to reflect on their journey internally. Use these moments to reveal the character’s changing beliefs, doubts, and motivations, reinforcing their transformation.
- Climactic Conflict: Build towards a climactic conflict where the protagonist confronts the main obstacle or antagonist. This confrontation should test the character’s growth, forcing them to apply the lessons they’ve learned throughout the story.
- Resolve and New Equilibrium: After the climactic conflict, provide a resolution that reflects the character’s transformation. It’s the final minutes of the movie and the message your audience will embrace as the credits roll.
By utilizing action, conflict, and structure effectively, you can guide your protagonist through a transformative arc that engages and captivates your audience.
For this free webinar as well as a few upcoming ones, we’ll focus on using examples from the following films/tv shows:
